Anxiety Treatment
Are You Overwhelmed By Feelings of Anxiety?
- Do you imagine living life at a slower pace but you struggle to be calm enough to make that happen?
- Have you dealt with constant repetitive thoughts and anxious feelings for too long?
- Do you worry about the effects anxiety has had on your health?
You might be preoccupied with the thought that something bad will happen to you or your loved ones. Or perhaps you feel nervous about interacting with people in your workplace or at social events, keeping you isolated and missing out on new relationships.
No matter how anxiety shows up in your life, you probably wonder if getting some treatment can break this cycle so you can experience more times when you are enjoying life again.
Living With Daily Anxiety Can Make Life A Struggle
Some form of fear, which can be conscious or unconscious, is usually what drives anxiety. So you may be living a big part of your day in fear without knowing exactly what you are afraid of.
When you have anxiety, you have stress. And that added stress on a daily basis can create physical symptoms such as headaches, high blood pressure, shallow breathing, and excess tension in your body. You may even experience occasional panic attacks where your heart beats faster, you have shortness of breath, and out-of-control negative feelings start to overwhelm you.
Perhaps you have tried to resolve your anxiety but have a difficult time letting go and relaxing, which can cause more frustration. In turn, these feelings of frustration can contribute to creating a negative cycle of anxiety that can be very challenging to break out of.
But help is available. With the support of a skilled anxiety therapist, it is highly probable that you can find relief from your physical and mental symptoms and experience life without the daily challenge of anxiety running the show.
Anxiety Usually Stems From Our Fears
Many people in this country suffer from anxiety. But living with it doesn’t have to become something we simply accept as a part of life, despite how common it is.
Through my experience as a counselor over the years, I have learned that anxiety often develops from our fears. And once we become more aware of the fears that fuel our anxiety, we can productively work to alleviate them. Typically, it turns out that many of the things we dread never materialize.
F E A R – False Expectations Appearing Real
Trying to predict the future usually causes more anxiety, and people often create false expectations about what could happen to them. In essence, fear could symbolize: False Expectations Appearing Real.
We often react to our fears as if they were real. While we have good reason to fear a real threat, like a tiger, most of the worries that spur our anxiety actually turn out to be nothing but “paper tigers”—perceived threats in our minds that are harmless.
Therapy can teach you many skills and provide you with resources that can help you successfully understand and manage your anxiety.
Anxiety Treatment Can Help You Confront Your Fears And Manage Them
People often try to get rid of their anxiety by pushing it away or ignoring it, denying that it even exists. But trying to push it away usually only creates resistance and keeps it firmly locked in place.
Of course, facing your anxiety and treating it on your own can be a struggle. Many times, simply being present to your negative thoughts and worries without judgment can help you shift into a more positive space inside. By sitting with your negative thoughts and worries, you can gain valuable awareness that can be used to help you alleviate your anxiety. As an experienced therapist, I offer my guidance and support to help you learn to move past your anxiety.
My Approach To Anxiety Treatment
I have over twenty years of anxiety counseling experience, and the treatment methods I use can help you stay present, look at your feelings objectively, and reframe your thoughts.
- Mindfulness – I can show you how to stay present with your anxiety and be aware of it in the moment so you can listen to what it wants to tell you. With the information received during this process, you can learn to lessen your anxiety. Quite often, the solution to your difficulties with anxiety is located within the difficulties themselves.
- Working With Your Internal Family – I also incorporate working with different internal parts in anxiety treatment that make up what I call your internal family, which has some similarities to IFS therapy. This approach allows you to learn about and look at the different “parts” of yourself that evolved or developed throughout your life and to understand the way that they are impacting your present-day experience. Simple awareness is often curative.
- Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) – I can show you how to modify your negative thoughts to more positive ones that can help you manage your anxiety. For example, I may encourage you to ask yourself: Do you notice what kind of self-talk you engage in, and whether it’s positive or negative? Anxiety usually prompts a cycle of negative thoughts, which can be hard to break out of. That’s why it’s important to question what your worries are telling you, and CBT can help you do that.
Treatment sessions at my practice can help you explore how and when the seeds of your anxiety were planted in your life. Knowing this allows you to uproot your anxiety, deprive it of its energy, and put your newfound sense of freedom toward living a fulfilling life on your terms.
With my support, you can learn to create more peaceful moments and opportunities for feeling balanced and calm.
You May Still Have Questions Or Concerns About Anxiety Treatment…
I have tried therapy before and it didn’t work well for me. How will this time around be any different?
As the saying goes, the “proof is in the pudding,” and this also applies to trying therapy again if you’ve already tried it unsuccessfully in the past. Only, this time around, you can learn to make different and more effective choices for yourself. It can feel scary to open up to a therapist again about your anxiety, especially if you have worked with a counselor in the past who was not able to help you. Sometimes, the timing isn’t right to face your anxiety, so part of therapy is being open to the process itself. The best way to see if my approach will work for you is to get started and find out.
How long will I have to be in therapy and how often will sessions be scheduled?
When we first meet, we can discuss your goals and work collaboratively to determine how we’ll achieve them. Most clients start out with weekly meetings. Occasionally, I have clients who ask to start with twice-weekly sessions until things feel more stable. Others may meet with me once every two weeks, and some once a month. While the frequency is up to you, I think weekly is a good place to begin for most people as it’s often enough to feel consistent and reliable.
How soon can I expect results?
The time tends to vary, depending on the client. But if you find that you resonate with my treatment approaches, you should start seeing positive changes in your anxiety level from the beginning. The key is to take the positive results you experience during our sessions and institute them into your everyday life. I can give you tools and resources to bring about those everyday life changes; it is up to you to implement them.
